Biography

Hilde is a choreographer, choreologist, instructor and performer specialising in fusion dance. She trained extensively in numerous dance styles such as transcultural fusion, contemporary dance, Rwandan dance, hip hop, house, locking, flamenco, ATS, classical Indian dance, jazz, ballet and Oriental dance. She has also extensively trained in Silvestre Technique, a contemporary dance technique from Salvador, Brazil. Since 2012, she travels annually to Salvador to study this technique at its source.

She has a diploma in Dance Studies from Laban (2011) and she also has a BA in Dance and Visual Arts (2007) from Brighton University. She graduated from Laban in 2015 for a second time, she has a specialist diploma in Choreology.

Hilde is a IYN accredited yoga teacher (200hrs) from the Unity Yoga school in Brighton.

She is director of Masmoudi Dance Company, founding member of Chaos Carousel (a project with live music and tribal fusion) and is founder of the Tribal Remix Festival, a London based annual dance festival that hosts world renowned tribal fusion dance teachers and performers. She is also founding member of InangaTaxeem, a collaboration between Rwandan musicians and herself, exploring cross-cultural ideas.

She has performed and collaborated with some incredible artists, such as Natacha Atlas, Merlin Shepherd, Phil Thornton, Sabio Janiak, Violet Scrap,  Donna Mejia, Wendy Buonaventura, Tjarda Van Straten, Intayoberana, Inganzo Ngari and many more.

In July 2016 she was commissioned to create choreographic work with colleague Tjarda Van Straten at the Ubumuntu Arts Festival in Kigali, Rwanda. Their Movement For Humanity project was backed by over 100 supporters via a kickstarter campaign and involved three weeks of intense training with local dancers, followed by a performance at the festival.

In February/March 2017 she received arts council funding to work with dance artists from The Gambia on a project focusing on cultural exchange between The Gambia and The UK.

In September 2018 she moved to Rwanda to deepen her studies in Rwandan dance. She is currently studying with Inganzo Ngari, one of Rwanda’s top culture troupes. She previously worked with Aline Sangwa and Intayoberana also.

Her new project, ‘the legacy of Intore’ is a documentary exploring the legends of Rwandan music and dance, recording their stories and making Rwandan culture accessible for youth as well as diaspora. The film will debut in 2023.
